“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4

Why do people find it difficult to listen when we share the most important message in all the world? We talk with people and even plead with them at times, but they struggle to accept our message. We talked Sunday about the antichristian spirit and how that spirit is rampant in our culture. We can feel and experience the darkness and wickedness against the ways of anything Christian. Movie critics frequently downplay the appeal and message of Christian films hoping that people will not watch them. However, even amid the critics, God’s message continues to shine forth. John gives us encouragement, as he did with early believers, that we are God’s children and have overcome the false spirit of the world.

John shares the real reason we have the power to overcome. He reminds us that the Spirit living inside of us is far greater than the antichristian spirit permeating this world. When we surrender our life to Christ, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell with us. It is not like the Old Testament when the Holy Spirit would occasionally visit certain people to carry out God’s task. Now He dwells with us to encourage, convict and guide us in the ways of God. We should be so grateful for God’s anointing which sets us apart from the world to accomplish His purposes. Jesus told us that when the Spirit of truth came, He would guide us into all the truth. The truth is Jesus and we get into trouble when we try to define truth by our own ideas and experiences. The spirit of falsehood so rampant in John’s day is the same spirit of falsehood we experience today. False teachers and false prophets are of this world. When they speak, people are gullible and listen very intently to them. It is obvious that the world does not understand the things of God.

We should be so thankful that we are God’s children and belong to Him. The ways and ideas of this world seem odd and strange to us because we do not belong here. We are only here for a short time to carry out the purpose of God for which we were created. We know that this world is filled with falsehood and will not listen to the truth. Yet, that does not mean that we just give up and stop sharing the truth to others. No, it should challenge us to present the message even more because we are filled with compassion for those who are so blinded by the world’s viewpoint.

By the way, Overcomer is a great movie and well worth your time to watch. It does portray the truth even though the critics blast it as much as they can. Isn’t that what the enemy has been doing all along? Hope you have a great week as you continually stand for and proclaim the truth even in this dark world.
